9 Tips to Create an Engaging Training Session

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

This blog post contains an excerpt from Dr. Bush's book titled: Standing on Tables: Making Training Fun and Engaging for Learner.

  1. Tell trainees what you will cover. Start the session with your training subject's main points.

  2. Tell them the information. You need to explain key points, demonstrate procedures, and provide any other information trainees need to know.

  3. Tell them what you told them. Refer to what you have said during the start of the session, ensure to repeat important points to enable learners to retain enough information.

  4. Try to use a practical approach to learning as much as possible as practical training supersedes theoretical approach.

  5. Demonstrate teaching points to create greater understanding and knowledge of the subject.

  6. Test frequently to determine whether learners have achieved their goals.

  7. Answer their questions with a practical view to enable understanding.

  8. Repeat questions before answering them. It’s important for the participant to hear their question spoken aloud back to them for complete clarity. This will also ensure that you the presenter are responding to the exact question the student is asking and alleviating frustration.

  9. Solicit feedback on the training session. Getting the feedback on your training can be used to make your presentation, the materials, and the curriculum better.
